Ayurveda Revisited

Is Ayurveda an Old - School Practice?

No, actually, it’s timeless!

Disseminating Healing...

Often restated as the “Science of Life”, Ayurveda is one of the oldest holistic healing systems of the world. Ayurveda originated nearly 5000 years ago in India as a highly comprehensive system of medicine.

The term Ayurveda finds its etymology in two Sanskrit words:

·       “Ayu”, meaning "Life" or "Longevity", and

·       “Veda”, meaning "Knowledge" or "Science"

Classical Connotation

The expression "Swasthasya Swasthya Rakshanam, Aturasya Vikar Prashnamicha" which means "To protect the health of the healthy and to treat the diseases of the sick", is the foundational, twofold objective of Ayurveda, cited in the Charaka Samhita (Sutra-sthana 30/26).

Ayurveda integrates Lifestyle Management, Natural Therapies, Meditation, Yoga, and Detoxification Techniques such as “Panchkarma”. The following core fundamentals of Ayurveda are mentioned in texts like ‘Charak Samhita’ and ‘Sushruta Samhita’:

·       Theory of Tridosha (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha)

The unique ratio of these three Doshas ascertains the Constitution or Prakriti of a person that acts as a prototype to attain optimal health.

·       Panchamahabhuta (Five Elements)

The five elements, namely Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Ether/Space, that form everything in the universe, combine to form the above–mentioned three vital Bio-Energies or Doshas.

·       Dhatus (Tissues), Malas (Wastes), and Agni (Digestive Fire)

As per the proponents of Ayurveda, optimal health requires the effective functioning of the Body Tissues, efficient elimination of Wastes, and strong Digestive Fire.

Ayurveda’s Integrative Potential, Root-Cause Treatment, Minimal Side–Effects, and emphasis on Prevention through Lifestyle Changes accord an edge to this Therapeutic Framework. The recent Delhi Declaration on Traditional Medicine is a testimony that even the World Health Organization (WHO) commends to integrate evidence-based Traditional Medicine (including Ayurveda) into National Health Systems.
